“Walking with Deity” is an experimental performance. I took a basket cart and put a CRT TV inside while joining the King of Qingshan temple festival in Wanhua. I walked with the crowd while showing the edited news archive footage. The newsreels were Taiwan Film Culture Co. Newsreel Archive from 1945 to 1990, and they were shot by the authoritarian regime, known as the Kuomintang government, during martial law. I zoomed in on the face of the crowd and found an interesting dynamic between the camera and the subject. I brought my art out on an annual pilgrimage. I connected with the older generation who could see themselves in the archives. My work also sparked the curiosity of children who are unfamiliar with CRT televisions. In these ways, my work creates conversations across generations. The conversations are about how we recognize ourselves in the archives and also how the past can excite those for whom it is new, such as the children who are surprised by the technology. “Reflection of the Time” documents the whole process.
